Bonaire is one of only four breeding grounds for the Caribbean flamingo. In the southern part of the island we find the Flamingo Sanctuary in the Pekelmeer. This reserve is strictly forbidden to humans, so the flamingos can breed here in peace.
A barrier reef protects the beautiful Lac Bay on which this area, including the beach resort of the same name and the famous Hang Out Beachbar, lies and keeps the shallow waters calm.
