Sunwise insider tip

An absolute must during your stay at Villa Mistralea is a visit to the salt pans in the south of Bonaire. Salt production here has been managed by Canadian multinational Cargill since 1997, using modern facilities that produce hundreds of millions of kilograms of salt every year – unmistakable thanks to the iconic white salt pyramids visible from miles away. Along the road you'll also find the colorful historic slave huts and shallow salt ponds where pink flamingos wade and feed. It's a remarkable piece of Bonairean heritage that's not to be missed.

Just so you know

  • No dryer – There's no tumble dryer at the villa, but you'll barely need one: thanks to Bonaire's sunshine and constant trade winds, laundry dries completely within a few hours.
  • Cold water in the kitchen – The kitchen tap provides cold water only, which is common on Bonaire and perfectly fine for washing up in this warm climate.
  • Unpaved access road – The road leading to the villa is unpaved and can feel a bit bumpy – a true Bonairean experience, and no problem at all for most standard vehicles.

The neighborhood

Located south of the town center in the direction of the salt pans, Belnem is one of Bonaire's best-known residential and vacation zones – historically connected to Harry Belafonte. Over the years, Belnem has grown into an umbrella name for upscale sub-neighborhoods such as La Palma, Sabal Palm, Lima, Punt Vierkant, and Playa Esmeralda. You're close to beloved south coast beaches like Bachelor's Beach and iconic dive sites, making it ideal for sunsets and relaxed beach life. It's a quiet, residential area with quick access to the airport and town center.

Getting around

A rental car is highly recommended if you want to explore Bonaire beyond the immediate surroundings of Villa Mistralea in Belnem. With your own wheels, every corner of the island is within easy reach – from secluded snorkeling spots along the wild coastline to laid-back local restaurants. Most of Bonaire's roads are paved and easy to navigate, but for visits to natural areas such as Washington Slagbaai National Park, a pickup truck or SUV is strongly advised, as the trails inside the park are unpaved and can be quite rugged. There is no public transportation on Bonaire and taxis are limited, especially on busy days when a cruise ship is in port – having a rental car gives you the freedom to go wherever the island takes you.

Gotta Love Bonaire!!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at this home in Kralendijk, Bonaire. The home is older but very well maintained, with a charming and quaint neighborhood atmosphere that added to the island experience. The garden and outdoor areas were nicely cared for, and the location offered easy access to both town and many of Bonaire’s excellent dive sites. One feature we especially appreciated was the excellent setup for scuba divers, including plenty of accommodations for rinsing and washing dive gear after long days in the water. The kitchen was well stocked and allowed us to prepare several homemade meals during our stay. While a little additional cabinet space could be helpful, it certainly did not take away from the comfort or enjoyment of the home. The air conditioning was a welcome relief during the warm Bonaire evenings and made sleeping very comfortable. Although the home is conveniently located near the airport, the area remained surprisingly quiet and peaceful throughout our stay. The pool is on the smaller side, but it serves its purpose well for relaxing, cooling off, and enjoying a little sunshine. We did experience a few pool issues during our visit, but Ellie was prompt, attentive, and thorough in taking care of everything. She communicated well with the owner, and together they were responsive and committed to making things right. Ellie truly helped make our stay enjoyable. Read more

Simple and Sweet

The home is simple but clean home located on a quite street. Close to Batchelor Beach and Sorobon. The reviews about this house are a bit mixed but i think expectations need to match the price of the property. The home is clean and I can see it has recent upgrades to make it nicer. The showers are now good, the bathrooms are clean and newer, lots of beach towels/linens/pillows provided. The kitchen is well equipped with all the basics. We didn't use the dishwasher at all since it is so small, in my opinion they should remove it so there is more counter space. The AC works good in the bedrooms. Any concerns we had were addressed very fast. Unfortunately for us the pool was in the middle of being refinished. They filled it up for us but it didn't look very appealing at all. But this should be completed soon. Its such a small pool anyways, we prefer swimming in the sea. The internet/wifi was marginal. They could really do with an upgrade on that. If you have to do any significant work online while you are here, that may be difficult. But it was ok for some facetime calls and basic internet scrolling. Its nice that there was an automatic gate (to keep out the donkeys) and an area for the car to be parked in the shade. We had a great 2 weeks. The front porch was amazing to sit and have a coffee any time of the day. It was peaceful and nice to watch all the beautiful birds. Thanks! Read more

Nice holiday home

The house is located in one of the nicest areas of Bonaire, in a quiet residential street, and is equipped with most comforts. We especially appreciated the spacious refrigerator, the small dishwasher, and the garden. There were plenty of towels and enough outdoor furniture. The Sunwise host was very easy to reach and responded immediately when there was a small issue. A downside was the camera directed at the pool and outdoor shower, as well as the motion sensors inside every room. Read more

Good deal, but a bit outdated

There were a few surprises when we came in: - The temperature in the master bathroom wasn't adjustable, either boiling hot or cold, no matter the settings. Pressure was excellent though. - No air conditioning in the main area, only in the bedrooms. So we either have to run all the fans to get some relief, or open both doors to create a draft. The problem with the latter was the bugs. So many bugs that it was hard to even sit outside unless it was windy. Now to be fair, the bug issue is everywhere on the island, but having air conditioning in the living room would alleviate it. - The kitchen is very outdated. Doors don't close, shelf under sink is falling apart, the dishwasher is ridiculously small, so that you can't include the dinner plates. No space to put the groceries. The microwave and fridge are very nice however. - The outdoor pool is perfect for young children or to cool off, but definitely not to swim. A crew came every week for maintenance. Also, it is in serious need of inside repainting. - All around the house, there's dozens of iguana poop, so you have to be careful where you step. That really can't be helped, but I think the yard should at least have been cleaned before our arrival. - The washing machine is in a closet outside the house. It's so small that it's not easy to get in and squat to get the laundry in and out. But at least, it works fine. Sunwise was very responsive and helped as much as they could. Overall you get what you pay for. Read more

The Villa was very nice, and I would like to thank the owners for sharing it with us. It was close to Scuba diving, and the airport. The Small pool was wonderful. If it had screens on the Doors it would have been perfect for our needs. The staff at Sunwise, were wonderful, Thanks Elie, and Elyse.... Read more
