Bonaire airspace reopened effective immediately, January 15, 2021
Today the Island Governor of Bonaire, Mr. Edison Rijna, announced that the emergency regulation which entails that flights on Bonaire may only be made from Curaçao, the Netherlands and Canada, will be revoked effective immediately, Friday evening, January 15.
Flights from the US possible again
The lifting of the regulation means, among other things, that after a long period of time (about 10 months!) direct flights from the United States of America can take place again, which means that our beloved American guests can come to the island again!
Previously, all guests from anywhere in the world were welcome on our island again, but due to the limitation of the number of departure points (Curaçao, the Netherlands, but also Canada, from where no flight schedule was set, because the Canadians had to spend two weeks in quarantine on their return anyway), our guests had to make a too big detour to reach our island.
Still measures and mandatory PCR test
The entry requirements will remain in place for the time being. This means: being able to show a PCR test with a negative result and being able to submit a completed health statement. Furthermore, our guests will have to inform themselves about any requirements upon their return and for Americans this can be done, for example, here on the website of the Bureau of Consular Affairs. Yesterday it was announced that American citizens must also be able to submit a negative PCR test upon their return.
On Bonaire there are now various initiatives to obtain such a test, with a written statement, whereas previously this was only possible for people who reported to their family doctor with complaints. The local corona measures will also remain in place for the time being and the current state of affairs in this regard can be viewed on the crisis website of the OLB.
Services have yet to get going
Mr. Rijna did emphasize that the various providers (including Delta Airlines, United Airlines, Sunwing and American Airlines) still need to start their program and sell their tickets first, before services will be resumed.
We will keep our guests informed of the developments with the airlines in this blog and they can already prepare themselves by selecting one of the nice accommodations on Bonaire!
