STINAPA Bonaire: Great progress in protecting Lac Bay
STINAPA Bonaire has made great strides in protecting Lac Bay. Thanks to rangers, nature restoration projects and improved cooperation, the area’s future is brighter.
STINAPA Bonaire is committed to wildlife management
The protection of Lac Bay has received a major boost. STINAPA Bonaire, together with partners, has made significant strides. After almost two years of intensive effort, the Lac Pa Semper project is nearing completion. This initiative ensures more sustainable wildlife management and better control in the area.
Permanent rangers improve surveillance and control
A big change is the daily presence of rangers in Lac Bay and Sorobon. These wildlife rangers provide supervision and guidance. They are directly approachable by visitors and enforce rules. This has improved nature fee collection and provides more control over cruise tourists. In addition, there are now two observation towers with informative signs about the biodiversity of this Ramsar area.
Water quality remains high, but surprising discoveries
Water samples were taken every two weeks. The results? In general, the water in Lac Bay is very clean. Sometimes bacterial activity rises, especially after heavy rains. This is being investigated further in cooperation with the Public Health Department.
In addition, something unusual has been discovered. Scientists long thought that sand movement in the bay caused silting. But the opposite turned out to be true! The bay remains stable. What is worrying is the rise in sea level. In 30 years, it has risen by about 9 centimeters. This shows the impact of climate change on marine ecosystems.
Nature restoration projects: coral and eelgrass on the rise
Another highlight is the collaboration with Reef Renewal Bonaire. They have set up a coral nursery to restore the reefs. Initial results are promising, despite the challenges of recent bleaching. In addition, the seagrass restoration project is having unexpected success. Turtlegrass is naturally expanding around the planted areas. This offers hope for the future of Lac Bay.
Stronger collaboration with stakeholders
One of the biggest successes? Improved communication with stakeholders. STINAPA Bonaire, the OLB, and Reef Renewal worked together smoothly. This led to the establishment of the annual “Lac Bay Day. This day is dedicated to raising awareness and involvement in wildlife management.
A key lesson? Appointing an outside project manager through Coastal Dynamics. This turned out to be a smart move. The administrative burden was lightened, allowing more focus on actual conservation. Proactive communication with stakeholders played a crucial role.
