Karpata is one of Bonaire’s most iconic dive sites, with spectacular coral reefs, clear waters and a peaceful, secluded atmosphere. Discover tips, snorkeling opportunities, local hot spots and a perfect vacation rental nearby for an unforgettable diving experience.

Where is Karpata located?

Karpata is located on the northwest coast of Bonaire. You’ll find this dive site just above the popular 1000 Steps. The way there is already an adventure. Narrow roads, sea views, and then suddenly: there is Karpata. Located in the Bonaire National Marine Park, so you need a Nature Tag to dive.

What makes Karpata so special?

The view from the shore is already magical. But just wait until you get into the water. Karpata is one of the best spots for reef diving on the island. The reef starts close to shore, so you don’t have to swim far. And then… BAM! It teems with fish and the coral takes on beautiful shapes and colors.

Why is this place so famous? Simple: the coral formations are insanely beautiful. As if someone laid it out especially for you.

How to reach the dive site?

You drive to the northern part of the island and park near the boarding point. Down a concrete staircase you walk to the water. It’s a true shore dive, so it’s ideal if you don’t want to rent a boat. But beware: there can be some current, so some diving experience is helpful.

What a marine life!

Diving at Karpata feels like snorkeling in an aquarium. Think perch, doctor fish, hard and soft coral, parrotfish and turtles. Oh yes, and that one time…. a lionfish!

Underwater photography fans are in for a treat. The colors are bright, the fish diversity is great, and visibility is usually top notch.

Water conditions at Karpata? Nice and tropical!

The water temperature is around 26 degrees. Visibility varies between 20 and 30 meters. And although the current is sometimes treacherous, it usually remains manageable.

Diving conditions

Karpata is suitable for divers with some experience. The reef is on a drop-off. Exciting? Yes. Difficult? No, if you get your trim right.

Snorkelers also get their money’s worth here. In the first meters you can already see fish, anemones and beautiful coral. Don’t forget: bring water shoes. The rocky entry can be slippery.
