Why hiking to Wasao is a must

Imagine: a narrow path, the occasional cactus, around you nothing but nature. You hear the wind, you feel the sun. And there, at the end of the path: Wasao, overlooking Lake Goto, Slagbaai and, on a clear day, even Curaçao. Wow!

This route is not just a walk. It is an adventure. A climb. An experience.

Hiking or biking?

The route is known as the Spruit Trail, named after the Spruit family who opened up the trail and even put a picnic table on top of the hill. The route is marked with blue stones, indicating it is an official bike trail. But honestly? It’s also perfect for hiking. So yes, you can bike there. But hiking? That’s how you take in every detail.

Halfway along the Wasao Trail

How to reach Wasao without getting lost

Drive towards Bopec – a place you are sure to recognize. Following the Tourist Road, you will pass such well-known spots as 1000 Steps and Karpata country house. Just after Karpata, turn left and keep following the sea. At the end, at a sharp bend, go straight towards Bopec. Just before the barrier turn right and park near the wildlife grid.

From there? Walk up. Look for the blue stone in the bend – that’s your starting point. Ready for the climb?

The climb to Wasao: every step is worth it

The path winds uphill. Narrow, with rocks under your feet, cactus all around you and the occasional jump over a loose boulder. But that’s what makes it fun. And then those moments when you look back: Kralendijk sparkles in the distance.

At the three-way intersection just before the summit go straight ahead. Don’t hesitate. A few steps further and there she is: the picnic table with a view.

Your eyes are looking out. Over Washington Slagbaai National Park, over Lake Goto, on clear days even as far as Curaçao. It is pure enjoyment.

On the way back? Choose your own adventure

You can take the same path back. Or… you follow the narrow path further towards the transmitter mast. There the path becomes wider and easier. After the barrier, turn left and walk along a dirt road back to your car. Simple!
