When people think of Bonaire, they often think of Lac Bay and windsurf Sorobon. On the east coast of the island, Sorobon offers one of the most famous lagoons in the world for windsurfing. In this guide we share our local tips to help you plan the perfect session.

Why Sorobon windsurf is so special

Sorobon sits on Lac Bay, a large, shallow lagoon with bright turquoise water and trade winds almost all year. The water is waist deep in many areas, which makes it ideal for learning new moves or getting back into windsurfing after a break.

The sorobon windsurf scene is also famous for its laid-back vibe. Between sessions you can relax on a sun bed, order a drink and watch riders fly past in the bay. It feels like a small surf community in the middle of the Caribbean.

If you travel with someone who does not windsurf, Sorobon is still a great place to spend the day. The beach is sandy, the water behind the reef is calm and there is plenty of shade. You can head out on the water while your travel buddy enjoys a book in a hammock.

Together this makes sorobon windsurf perfect for both dedicated windsurfers and holidaymakers who just want to give it a try during their stay on Bonaire.

Gear and wind conditions at Lac Bay

Conditions for sorobon windsurf are usually very consistent. The trade wind blows side-onshore, which feels safe and comfortable. Depending on your level and weight, most people ride sails between roughly 4.5 and 6.5 square meters at Lac Bay.

Not bringing your own gear? No worries. Along the beach at Sorobon you will find several centers where you can rent boards, sails and accessories. The staff is usually happy to help you select the right size and tune your setup for the day’s conditions.

A lycra or thin rash guard is a good idea. The sun is strong, and even though the wind feels cooling, you can get sunburned quickly. Surf booties can be helpful if you plan to walk a lot in the lagoon, although the bottom is generally soft.

Staying at Caribbean Court Djòdjò

After a full day of sorobon windsurf, you may want a quiet and comfortable base to recharge. Caribbean Court Djòdjò, located on the Laguna Marina, is a great choice. You can enjoy two shared swimming pools, a fully equipped kitchen and cozy bedrooms, so you wake up relaxed and ready for your next session. At only 6.1 km from Sorobon, you are just a short drive away from the beach while still having plenty of peace and comfort at your apartment.

Best time of year for Sorobon windsurf

Bonaire has wind all year, but for sorobon windsurf the period from roughly December through August is often the most reliable. During these months the trade wind is usually stronger and you get many days with great conditions.

Water temperatures are warm and stable. You will not need a thick wetsuit here. Boardshorts or a bikini with a lycra top is usually more than enough, even if you spend several hours a day on the water.

In the lighter wind months you can still enjoy windsurfing at Sorobon, but you may need a bit more patience and slightly bigger gear. The upside is that the lagoon and beach are often quieter.

Safety and etiquette on the water

When you surf at Sorobon you share the lagoon with other windsurfers, kiters and sometimes SUPs or swimmers. It is important to stay aware and give each other space. Always look around carefully before you gybe or tack.

Stay within the marked areas as much as possible. Local centers are happy to explain which zones are best for sorobon windsurf and which areas you should avoid. This helps protect the fragile reef and seagrass beds.

Do not forget to drink plenty of water and use reef-safe sunscreen with a high SPF. The mix of wind, salt and sun feels amazing, but it is easy to dehydrate or get sunburned without noticing.

Making the most of your Sorobon windsurf trip

No wind for a day? That is a perfect chance to explore other sides of the island. You can go snorkeling with turtles, visit the national park or enjoy a relaxed evening in Kralendijk. This turns your sorobon windsurf holiday into a complete Bonaire experience.
