Lionfish Derby Bonaire 2024: Help protect the reefs
Participate in the Lionfish Derby Bonaire on November 30, 2024 at Washington Slagbaai National Park! Protect Bonaire’s reefs by fighting the invasive lionfish. Form a team, catch lionfish, and help preserve Bonaire’s ecosystem.
On Nov. 30, the annual Lionfish Derby Bonaire will take place at Washington Slagbaai National Park. This special event brings together divers and nature lovers in the fight against the invasive lionfish. This year is extra special because the park will temporarily open, despite its closure since May 2023 to divers. Join us and make a difference for Bonaire’s beautiful reef ecosystem!
Why is the Lionfish Derby Bonaire important?
The lionfish, also known as lionfish, poses a major threat to Bonaire’s underwater world. It is an invasive species that upsets the balance of ecosystems. They eat juvenile fish and shrimp, crucial to the reef. By controlling the population, we protect the health of the reef. Did you know that the reefs are also affected by Stony Coral Tissue Loss Disease (SCTLD)? This disease affects the coral, but thanks to efforts such as antibiotic treatments, some reefs remain strong. Read more about what Bonaire is already doing to protect the reef here.
What is Lionfish Derby Bonaire?
During the Lionfish Derby, teams of two hunters and one spotter compete. Each team tries to catch as many lionfish as possible. Last year, participants caught 80 specimens! This year, STINAPA hopes for an even greater success.
Competition begins at 7:00 a.m. at the park entrance. By 4 p.m., teams must be back to have their catch counted. A maximum of 15 teams may participate and registration can be done through the nature organization STINAPA.
How do you participate in the Lionfish Derby?
- Register quickly: The first 15 applications will be accepted.
- Assemble your team: You need two hunters and a spotter.
- Come prepared: Get a dive permit and a plan. The park closes for diving again after the event.
