Team Sunwise Bonaire likes to explore the possibilities on the island for its guests, to enrich their vacations with culinary adventures, educational tours and sporting ventures.
So last week our team and some family members, took the bold (rocky) step to climb a “mountain” from the top-20 highest points in the (Caribbean) Netherlands!
Climbing to the top of Brandaris is a challenging and rewarding experience. Standing at 786 feet (241 meter), Brandaris is the highest peak on the island and offers breathtaking views of the surrounding area.
The hike to the summit is not for the faint of heart, as we experienced, because it involves steep inclines and rocky terrain. Team Sunwise recommends to wear sturdy hiking boots and bring plenty of water, as the climb can be strenuous. The hike took us 2.5 hours, but it can of course vary depending on your pace.
The trail starts at Washington Slagbaai National Park and when we climbed higher, we saw the landscape transforming into a rocky, arid terrain, typical of our beautiful island’s unique ecology. Along the way, we encountered various species of cacti and other drought-resistant plants.
As you can see on the pictures, at the summit, we experienced panoramic views of the island and the Caribbean Sea. It was a clear day when we went, but nevertheless we could not see Curaçao and Aruba, something that, according to the stories, should be possible. We’ll save that for next time, then!
It is important to note that the trail can be dangerous, and hikers should be cautious and pay attention to their surroundings. Visitors to Washington Slagbaai should also be aware that the park is a protected area and that it is illegal to remove or damage any plants or wildlife.
In conclusion, climbing to the top of Brandaris on Bonaire was a challenging and rewarding experience for Team Sunwise. Bonaire’s unique ecology and stunning views make it a must-see destination for all our guests!
