Bonaire in 100 photos – On my way to freedom
On Bonaire, newly hatched sea turtles begin their perilous journey to the sea, instinctively navigating past predators on the beach. Their struggle against obstacles ends as soon as they reach the water, where their new life full of challenges and opportunities begins.
Newly born sea turtle on its way to the freedom of the sea.
An extraordinary natural wonder is taking place on Bonaire. Newly born sea turtles are making their way to freedom, to the sea here. These tiny creatures, just hatched, instinctively feel that they must go to the water. Their life begins with a race against time. As soon as they hatch, they dig themselves out of the sand and set sail toward the waves. The beach is wide and full of dangers. Predators, such as birds and crabs, lurk. They want to eat the turtles before they reach the safety of the sea. They use their little flippers to propel themselves despite the obstacles. Once they reach the water, a new adventure begins. The sea is big and full of challenges, but also full of opportunities. Here they will grow up, become stronger, and one day return to the same beach to lay their own eggs. The moment the little turtles reach the sea is a victory. It is the beginning of their life in the ocean, where they will hopefully live happily ever after.

“Bon dia tur hende i bon bini na dushi Boneiru!”
My name is Casper Douma and I am a photographer. Since 2014 I’ve been living on this beautiful island, surrounded by a fringing reef. At first glance, you may see mostly cacti and drought, but Bonaire is a little gem if you get to know it better. I would like to take you on one of my photography tours to show you all the special places of Bonaire. In small groups of maximum 4 people I give you a unique look at the beauty of Bonaire. Became curious? Take a look at my website! I wish you a lot of fun on beautiful Bonaire.
