A successful year for sea turtles on Bonaire
Volunteers and nest adopters played a crucial role in Bonaire’s successful 2024 nesting season. Sea Turtle Conservation Bonaire is committed to protection and research, while nature lovers can contribute through beach patrols and nest monitoring. The next nesting season will begin in May 2025.
Bonaire’s 2024 nesting season was a great success! A total of 132 nests were recorded, from which 10,504 baby turtles crawled. Of these little ones, 1,182 needed just a little more help to find their way safely to the sea. Thanks to the efforts of volunteers and conservation organizations, these young turtles were able to get a chance to survive in the ocean. This makes it a successful year for sea turtles on Bonaire!
Important role of nest adopters
Protecting the nests and successfully escorting the turtles out to sea would not be possible without the support of nest adopters. Their involvement and contributions enabled additional monitoring and care to be provided. This contributes to the protection of Bonaire’s sea turtle population and helps ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy these special animals.

Ongoing research on turtle population
With the nesting season behind us, current research is focusing on in-water surveys. Along the west coast of Bonaire, turtles are being captured to collect biometric data. This research provides valuable insights on the population size, growth rates and overall health of Bonaire’s sea turtles. This information is essential for developing effective conservation measures.
