Cactuses like trees!
Bonaire is known for its beautiful underwater world, but it has more to offer than that! From pretty beaches with green palm trees to desserts with big cacti, Bonaire has is all! If you are a fan of hiking Bonaire has a lot of beautiful hikes you can discover. A few years ago, a few great hike, bike and car routes are created on Bonaire to show the undiscovered spots on the island.
Bara di Karta
One of these routes is the Red Hill Hike. Located on the eastern side of the island in the same area as the car route Bara di Karta. The route starts with climbing the Red hill following one if the small goat tracks. On the top of the hill you will have a perfect view on the waters on Lagoen. Following the pink painted rocks, you will see the small beach of Lagoen. Feeling hot? This is the perfect spot for a swim!
The current in Boka Washikemba
The great part of this hike is the change in scenery, on the hill you had the feeling walking through a big cacti forest, while on the next part of the route you will be amazed by the width of the plain, with on the left side big waves smashing on the rocks. At the end you will find Boka Washikemba, definitely not suitable for swimming due to the strong current, but looking gives you already an amazing view on the big waves rolling in!
The most beautiful at sunset
The whole route will take you about 45 minutes without breaks. It’s good to wear sturdy shoes due to all the loose rocks on the ground. Because Bonaire can get really hot during the day, the best time to hike is in the early morning or the late afternoon. Both times will give you a great experience, but the sunset will give the sand an extra red glance! Take plenty of water and enjoy the great nature around you!
Tip: maps of the hike, bike and car routes are available at the tourist office in town.
There are no holiday homes in the area of this ‘hiking trail’, but from Santa Barbara, for example, where we offer the great villa Casa di Bon Bientu to our guests, it is only a fifteen minute drive to the starting point of the Red Hill Hiking Trail!
