The Bonaire Relay Expedition revealed more than 600 new invertebrate species. Researchers mapped the biodiversity with advanced techniques. These discoveries highlight the importance of conservation and form the basis for future scientific research and conservation measures on Bonaire.
Recent research has significantly expanded Bonaire’s biodiversity. During the Bonaire Estafette Expeditie (BEE, Bonaire Relay Expedition), 25 specialists discovered more than 600 new species of invertebrates on the island.
The Bonaire Estafette Expeditie (Bonaire Relay Expedition)
The BEE, organized by Naturalis Biodiversity Center in collaboration with Bonaire National Parks Foundation (STINAPA), took place from Oct. 8, 2022 to March 2, 2023. The goal was to map the terrestrial and freshwater invertebrates of Bonaire. Data were collected using various techniques such as pantraps, malaise traps and light trapping.

Key findings
Prior to the expedition, only 168 species of invertebrates were known on Bonaire. Thanks to the BEE, this number increased by more than 600 additional species. Some notable increases include:
– Beetles: from 42 to 242 species
– Grasshoppers: from 6 to 23 species
– Flies: from 9 to 94 species
– Moths: from 4 to 147 species
In addition, several taxa are new to science and will be named in the coming years.
Significance of discoveries
These discoveries highlight how little is still known about Bonaire’s biodiversity. The increased understanding of the species present can contribute to better conservation measures and conservation efforts.

Future steps
The results of the BEE have been published in a special edition of the Dutch Faunistic Communications. The corresponding datasets are available through the GBIF data platform. This information forms the basis for further research and conservation efforts on Bonaire.
Conclusion
The Bonaire Estafette Expeditie provided a wealth of new information about the island’s biodiversity. These discoveries underscore the importance of ongoing conservation efforts and further research into Bonaire’s unique ecosystems.
