Bonaire sustainability: one step further with smart LED lighting

Bonaire is taking steps toward sustainability with the rollout of smart LED lighting. This project, implemented by WEB and OLB, improves safety and reduces energy consumption. The installation of 1,000 street lights will make Bonaire safer and more energy efficient, with a focus on sustainability.

Bonaire is taking an important step toward sustainability with the second phase of the LED lighting project. This project, implemented by the Water- en Energiebedrijf Bonaire (WEB) in cooperation with the Public Entity Bonaire (OLB), focuses on improving street lighting on the island. The installation of as many as 1,000 smart street lights will not only make the island safer, but also more energy efficient.

A more sustainable Bonaire: what does it entail?

Sustainability on Bonaire means much more than just saving energy. It is about a safer living environment for everyone. In August 2023, the trial period began, during which 625 LED lights were installed. This was a great success! Now WEB is ready to start the full rollout. But what does this mean for the residents of Bonaire?

Activities and locations

The work will take place from August to November 2024. Work will begin in the neighborhoods of Amboina, Bario Wanapa, Bario Selesie, and part of Kaya Internashonal. The new LED lighting not only provides bright light but also reduces energy consumption. This is important for a more sustainable Bonaire.

Safety

Work will be performed Monday through Friday between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. For the safety of everyone, it is important that residents keep the space around the lampposts clear. This will help ensure that the work proceeds efficiently and safely. Road users are also kindly requested to adjust their speed in the areas where work is being done. Safety comes first!
