Pelican; what a magnificent bird! On Bonaire, you can find the brown pelican. The brown pelican is the smallest species of pelican that exists. When it spreads its wings, the brown pelican can reach a width of 100 to 228 cm and weigh between 2 to 5 kilograms. The brown pelican primarily feeds on fish, shrimp, and bird eggs. In the pelican family, the brown pelican stands out when it comes to hunting techniques. It is the only pelican species that uses a diving technique to catch fish. From a height of approximately 10 meters, they spot their prey and dive down. As seen in the photo, the pelican folds its wings backward and curves its neck in an S-shape. The speed of a dive can reach up to 95 km per hour. You can spot the brown pelican in many different places around the island, but they are often found in the harbors where boats are docked and on the beautiful Lac Cai beach among the mangrove trees.

“Bon dia tur hende i bon bini na dushi Boneiru!
My name is Casper Douma and I am a photographer. Since 2014 I’ve been living on this beautiful island, surrounded by a fringing reef. At first glance, you may see mostly cacti and drought, but Bonaire is a little gem if you get to know it better. I would like to take you on one of my photography tours to show you all the special places of Bonaire. In small groups of maximum 4 people I give you a unique look at the beauty of Bonaire. Became curious? Take a look at my website! I wish you a lot of fun on beautiful Bonaire.”
